I’m buying a house in New Mexico and a friend has a house in Oregon. Can we submit a 1031 property exchange. What legal ramifications are there if any?

It does not appear tht geographic location plays any part.

are you an investor??? Why would you want to exchange your homes? There are no cap gains for the sale of your home less than 250,000 for a single, 500,000 for marrieds.

1031 is trading for “like” property, has nothing to do with location
